Greetings, fellow humans. ๐Ÿ‘‹

This is Not A Bot - the newsletter about AI that was definitely not written by AI. Iโ€™m Haroon, CEO of Autoblocks and founder of AI For Anyone, and I share the latest news, tools, and resources from the AI space.

Happy Wednesday. ChatGPT turned six months old yesterday. When do you think itโ€™ll start walking?

Letโ€™s dive into itโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ’พ AI chips are harder to get than drugs

Nvidiaโ€™s A100 AI chip

Graphic Processing Units, or GPUs, are the lifeblood of generative AI.

Put it this way: GPUs are to AI what EDM was to middle school kids in 2015.

And currently, there is a severe shortage of GPUs. Almost every single GPU currently being used in the AI space is made by Nvidia, and they canโ€™t keep up with the demand for their high-powered chips.

Elon Musk went so far as to say that โ€œGPUs at this point are considerably harder to get than drugs.โ€ Thatโ€™s a wild statement to make, but honestly, pretty accurate.

Toronto-based AI chip design company Tenstorrent aims to help reduce that burden by partnering with LG Electronics to develop chips that power smart TVs, vehicle products, and data centers.

Tenstorrent was founded in 2016 and designed computers to train and run AI models. LG will use Tenstorrent's AI chip blueprint to create its own chips while exploring AI technology development opportunities.

๐Ÿ“ท Photo Albums are making a comeback

Credit: Reimagine

Do you remember a time when IRL photo albums existed? Feels like a generation ago, huh?

The big issue with those photos was they would often be creased, blurry, or just photographed poorly due to the technological limitations of the time.

But now, genealogy company MyHeritage is turning to AI to preserve old memories with the launch of its latest app, Reimagine.

The appโ€™s focus is to help users easily import printed photos in albums and restore them by improving their resolution, fixing scratches and creases, and even restoring color in black-and-white photos.

You also have the option of animating faces, a feature that went viral in 2021 with MyHeritageโ€™s launch of โ€œDeep Nostalgia.โ€

I am sending this to my grandparents ASAP.

๐Ÿค– Extinction

If I asked you, โ€œWhat would be the most likely cause of human extinction?โ€ what would you say?

Chances are youโ€™d say climate change, global nuclear annihilation, biological warfare, or ecological collapse. Or maybe a meteor ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš€

But today, AI tops that list.

For a long time, weโ€™ve heard industry experts and titans talk about the dangers and risks of AI and the need to slow down & properly regulate this technology.

Well now, nearly 400 AI experts, including high-level executives from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, have signed a statement warning that the risk posed by AI needs to be mitigated as a global priority.

Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.

Thatโ€™s right - the risk of extinction.

This comes at the back of limited regulatory efforts, with Microsoft President Brad Smith calling for more attention to more immediate uses of AI, such as deepfakes and the potential for disinformation.

Letโ€™s hope it doesnโ€™t EVER come to that, shall we?
