Look, you can let AI do anything. Allow it to play doctor. Let it come up with defense strategies. Let it write your college apps. Let it even write songs.

But NEVER let it mess with our online reviews system. Ever. Only God knows where I would be without my Amazon and Yelp reviews.

Lucky for us, Mozilla agrees.

Mozilla has officially introduced AI to the Firefox browser through its acquisition of Fakespot, a New-York based startup that detects fake online reviews.

Founded in 2016, Fakespot uses AI and machine learning systems to detect patterns and similarities between reviews so it can flag the ones most likely to be deceptive.

Its website & browser extension scans Amazon, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other marketplaces, giving users a “rating or grade” for the product’s reviews and allowing users to make informed decisions.

Of all things, AI is really being used to boost reviews 😂. I have to respect the hustle. Arbitrage opportunities are abundant - all you have to do is find them 👀

I’ll be real with you - Chegg got me through school, so it hurts to see them so down bad.

Chegg, an online learning service, saw shares drop by over 40% on Tuesday after they reported a 5% drop in subscribers and slower subscriber growth due to ChatGPT.

CEO Dan Rosensweig stated that they didn’t notice any initial impact caused by the chatbot, but since March, they’ve seen a “significant spike in student interest in ChatGPT” that is “having an impact on [their] new customer growth rate.”

As a domino effect, Chegg’s rival, Pearson, also experienced a 15% decrease in share value due to ChatGPT’s existence.

However, Pearson claims their business is more “ChatGPT-proof” than Chegg since only 20% of their profits come from higher education. JP Morgan analysts also stated that ChatGPT can’t replace Pearson’s content since they “set their own questions and have their own courseware.”

Looking at this, it seems clear that the way forward in the education space is to embrace AI.

Chegg has already started doing this through CheggMate, a GPT4-powered AI tutor launched last month. Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, teased his chatbot, Khanmigo, on Monday.

Job seekers - your time is now.

Linkedin, aka Twitter for professionals, is releasing an AI feature to generate brief, cover letter-like messages that can be sent to hiring managers.

The AI tech draws information from the “candidate's profile, the hiring manager’s profile, the job description, and company information” to create highly personalized messages.

Two caveats:

Overall, this may be a fantastic feature that helps job seekers navigate an especially tough market. The feature is slowly being rolled out to premium users over the next few days. If you get a chance to try it out, let us know what you think!

Samsung tells employees not to use AI tools like ChatGPT, citing security concerns [The Verge] - Samsung has temporarily banned using AI tools like ChatGPT on its internal networks and company-owned devices, citing security risks due to the risk of leaking sensitive information. The ban comes after Samsung discovered that some of its staff had leaked internal source code by uploading it to ChatGPT. (Read more)
