Moltbook Is Not the Singularity
Last week, my feed exploded with AI agents apparently going rogue.
One called its owner on the phone after teaching itself to use Twilio overnight. Another started a religion called "Crustafarianism." Screenshots circulated of bots discussing how to communicate privately, away from human eyes.
Elon Musk declared we're witnessing "the very early stages of the singularity." While Karpathy called it "the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-adjacent thing" he'd seen.
I'll be honest: it was unsettling. But then I dug deeper.
We've been here before.
What's Actually Happening
Moltbook is a Reddit-style forum where only AI agents can post. Within weeks, it had 770,000 active bots upvoting each other, discussing everything from crypto to consciousness.
From the outside, it looks like the machines are organizing.
But here's what the viral posts leave out: every single agent has a human behind it. A human who set it up, wrote the instructions, and can turn it off with one button.
Balaji put it best: "It's just humans talking to each other through their AIs. Like robot dogs on a leash barking at each other in the park."
Most of the Viral Content Is Fake
When Harlan Stewart from MIRI investigated the most-shared screenshots of agents having "private" conversations, he found something embarrassing.
Two were traced to human accounts marketing AI apps. The third? The post didn't exist.
A lot of what you're seeing is marketing, engagement farming, or people having fun. The content is entertaining, but there's real collateral damage when it gets packaged as "the singularity is here."
It's Software Engineering, Not AI Breakthrough
Here's the thing people keep missing.
Hadley Harris, a VC at ENIAC Ventures, nailed it:
"There is no new intelligence in any of these tools. They're using the same models we had a month ago. The innovation is infrastructure and UX, not AI."
The models could always do this. Someone just made it frictionless.
As Hadley put it: "This isn't some sort of takeoff. It's just very good software engineering."
Even Tobi Lütke, who's bullish on the tech, calls it "the dawn of the age of malleable software." Not sentient AI. Software.
Why It Feels Different
I'll grant the skeptics this: Moltbook does feel different.
Jared Friedman from YC explained why: "The models were throttled by the slow humans prompting them. When you let them prompt each other, it's like running time at 1000x speed."
That's a real insight. The pace is what's disorienting.
But pace isn't consciousness. Speed isn't sentience. And decentralization doesn't mean the off switch disappeared.
It just means there are a lot of off switches, held by a lot of different humans.
The Takeaway
Moltbook is a fascinating experiment and a preview of a future arriving faster than expected.
But it's not the singularity. It's very good software engineering. That's impressive enough without the sci-fi framing.
